Metamorphoses

METAMORPHOSES is a collection of Greek myths woven together into a play about the transformational power of love. It was adapted by Mary Zimmerman from David R. Slavitt's translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses. The stories told in this play include that of Midas, Eros & Psyche, Orpheus & Eurydice, Phaeton, and Narcissus, as well as other, less familiar tales. It is a powerful, funny, sad, romantic, profound and potentially transformative theatrical experience.

Performances: April 8–16, 2016

Claude Cahun has been imprisoned on the Isle of Jersey along with her stepsister (and lover) for her resistance activities against the occupying German forces in 1944. She and her stepsister are condemned to death. It is the last year of the war and starvation haunts the whole island. One German officer, a baron, saves the inhabitants by appealing to the Red Cross. He also is at odds with his own side, since the aristocratic officers at this point are rebelling against Hitler. However, he confronts Cahun because he finds her actions objectionable. At the last minute the Germans lose the war and Cahun survives. The play is based on Cahun's own documents, writings, photographs, and prison letters.

Performance: ONE NIGHT ONLY! Thursday, February 25, 2016
