About the Play

Ming is a young, twenty-something assimilated Asian-American who lives with his lover Oscar, a somewhat older Asian man. When Oscar tests positive for HIV, he tells his lover of four years to leave. Both men move on to new partners, Oscar with a younger Asian man, Daniel, and Ming with a Caucasian man, Robert. The play chronicles the four men's struggles in their relationships, highlighting the nature of love, desire, sexuality and self-identity in a series of interconnected stories. Performance pending agreement with playwright's representatives.

The Director: Judy Yen is excited to be making her directorial debut with Theatre@First. Judy has been involved with a number of past T@F productions, mostly behind the scenes, except when she became a villager/dragon in last year's Never After. A biologist by day, she's more accustomed to using her left brain than her right, so she is truly grateful for the opportunity to exercise her artistic side.
The Playwright: Born in Singapore -- where his first play, As If He Hears, was banned for portraying a gay character as "too sympathetic and too straight-looking," -- Chay Yew has gone on to become the Director of the Taper's Asian Theatre Workshop and the Resident Director at East West Players in Los Angeles. His plays have been produced by the New York Shakespeare Festival, Royal Court Theatre (London), Manhattan Theatre Club, Mark Taper Forum, East West Players, and TheatreWorks (Singapore), among many others. For his work, Mr. Yew has received the London Fringe Award, George and Elisabeth Marton Playwriting Award, GLAAD Media Award, APGF Community Visibility Award, Drama-Logue Award, Robert Chesley Award, McKnight Fellowship, TCG/Pew National Residency Program, and a 2007 Obie Award for Direction. Mr. Yew's plays are published by Grove Press and appear in numerous anthologies.
