What do people deserve? Really? Are you sure about that?
These plays should explore justice, consequences, and redemption through turns which are unexpected, provocative, and satisfying. This is not a festival about punishment or retribution, but transformative justice glimpsed through an artistic lens. We want stories that are funny, odd, moving, philosophical, emotionally resonant; tales of second chances, unusual karmic returns, or characters who get what they want (in all the wrong ways). We want works which challenge carceral thinking and explore moral ambiguity: the villain might be redeemable, rewards may be stranger than expected, and the universe may distribute cosmic receipts in a surprising manner. The script can be light; the script can be heavy; but it should end in real questions. If your short piece can delight, interest, unsettle, or change minds, then you're on the right track.
Calling all local playwrights: we want your short plays! Theatre@First seeks scripts for an evening of short plays to be performed in Somerville, MA over two weekends in August 2026. We are seeking plays by new or established local playwrights (residing within New England) that will draw the broadest possible audience while creating a vibrant evening of theatre. Please read this entire announcement carefully to ensure your submission adheres to our rules and guidelines.
