Frequently Asked Questions

When is the submission date? What happens after I submit my play?

The last day to submit your play was Monday February 21, 2022 at 11:59 PM. Our reading committee will review the submissions and will select a round of finalists.

Is there a submission fee?

Theatre@First is committed to a diverse and equitable theater community. We want to create space for underrepresented voices. Nope, no submission fee.

I’m a first-time playwright. Can I submit to FirstWorks?

YES! FirstWorks is specifically for unproduced plays that playwrights would like to workshop and receive feedback on.

How long should my full play be?

FirstWorks focuses on developing full-length plays. These are approximately 90 pages (90 minutes). Consider this your floor, not your ceiling.

What does FirstWorks mean by "unproduced" plays?

An unproduced play is a play that has no production history. This refers to any workshopping or performances a play has received. Workshopping and performances include table readings or staged readings as well as full performances (yes, even via Zoom).

I submitted my play last year and it wasn’t chosen. Can I submit again?

Absolutely!

I had a play chosen for a previous season of FirstWorks. Can I submit this year?

We want to make sure we’re introducing new voices to the Boston theater scene. If your play was chosen more than two seasons ago, feel free to submit! If your show was chosen in the past two seasons and you still want to be part of the FW team, join our reading committee!

I'm not a playwright, but I would still like to be involved. Can I?

Yes! We're looking for volunteers for our reading committee. The reading committee is responsible for reviewing all of our submissions and helping choose our finalists. You can sign up to volunteer here.
