Theatre@First rehearses and performs on the ancestral land of the Pawtucket and Massachusett tribal nations. We honor these communities and the elders of these nations—past, present, and future—and recognize the enduring relationships between Indigenous and Native communities and their traditional territories. We extend our respect to citizens of these nations who live here now, to their ancestors who have lived here for over five hundred generations, and to all Indigenous people.
We affirm that this acknowledgement is insufficient. It does not undo the harm that has been done through violence and injustice over the past 400 years and that continues today. We recognize that land acknowledgements are only a small yet important step towards ensuring a culture of respect, truth, and accountability in our community.
We commit ourselves to working toward a greater understanding of our relationship with this land and its people, and to sharing this growing understanding with the Theatre@First participants and audience. As part of this work, Theatre@First contributes annually to NAICOB, the North American Indian Center of Boston.
Welcome to the life of Julie d’Aubigny. A world of sword fighting, singing, dancing, and strong opinions on who could and couldn’t wear breeches.
As dramaturges, it was our role to help bring this world to life for our actors and audiences. While other plays, songs, and stories throughout the centuries have explored Julie d’Aubigny’s life, this production asks us to look beyond these larger than life stories (which were often true!) and examine who she was as a person.
Julie’s world was very different from ours, and yet at times it feels remarkably similar. Some of the words we use today to describe her, such as “bisexual” or “queer,” would have been completely unfamiliar to her. Julie would also have been far more familiar with the intricate dynamics and rules of etiquette at the court of King Louis XIV than any of us! Yet despite this, we believe that her story—her challenges, successes, and triumphs—will be familiar to many in our audience. As Julie says in the play:
“Let them call me what they must for I can be no other than I am.”
It has been an honor to direct the world premiere of The Aria of Julie d’Aubigny, and I am so grateful to our incredible cast and crew—for their time, their talent, and their passion.
There’s so much that I could write about this play! I want to tell you how I relate to these characters chafing against the gendered expectations put upon them. I want you to know how meaningful it is to tell a story with a protagonist whose bisexuality is presented not as aberrant or challenging, but as unremarkable. I want to talk about my struggles with suicidal ideation and how Monica’s words speak directly to those intrusive thoughts and refute them. But I don’t have the space here.
Instead I’ll say this: now is a difficult moment to be making art. It feels wrong to spend time making something that seems unnecessary when the world is on fire.
Yet, it’s more important than ever to make art. Last year, the National Endowment for the Arts announced that any art “promoting gender ideology” wouldn’t be funded. Why the censorship? They know that throughout history, art has been a powerful tool for fighting oppression, from the rise of blues music in the Jim Crow south, to the anti-Nazi paintings of Arthur Szyk. Good art builds empathy for our fellow humans; it lets us imagine a better world, and it can galvanize us into action.
I hope that our play today inspires you to action, and I hope that you keep making and experiencing art. Art that brings you joy. Art that reminds you of the depth and breadth of humanity. Art that inspires resistance, builds community, and fights tyranny.
